Fred Baker

Writer/Filmmaker/Actor/Director Fred Baker came to films via an extensive career in the theatre which began in 1952 when Fred played a leading role in Mary Chase's Bernardine on Broadway.

After a three year stint in the U.S. Army in Korea and Europe, Baker starred in three films made in Germany for U.S. television, and, upon returning to New York, he began a string of character roles in many Broadway and national touring productions.

Eventually, Baker began directing Off-Broadway and Road companies in shows starring Henry Fonda, Faye Dunaway, Burgess Meredith, Raymond Burr, Alexis Smith, Barbara Bel Geddes, Craig Stevens, Michael Rennie, Rod Steiger and Clare Bloom.

The father of three, married to the late knitwear designer Barbara Baker. Fred began his film and TV work in the mid-1960's at Channel 13, WNET Public Broadcasting. From there, he began his work as an independent filmmaker.

Fred and his wife Barbara founded FBFVCO, Fred Baker Film & Video Company, in the 1970's and Fred went on to not only produce independent films of his own but also to acquire and distribute a number of gem international film hits including David Lynch's Eraserhead, Luchino Visconti's The Innocent, Marco Fererri's Tales Of Ordinary Madness, and Jean-Charles Tachella's Cousin Cousine.

Fred has kept up his acting work on stage with a 2003 appearance as Roy Cohn in Tony Kushner's Angels in America on a ten week road tour of the Southwest.
